Birds

Birds have always been there at the edge of my vision and as a child on my plate. I spent most of my childhood messing about on a farm in Norfolk and one of my earliest memories was throwing grain to chickens and collecting eggs. Pheasants were, and still are to me, exotic creatures who strutted across empty fields but, along with wild ducks, they arrived at the back door upside down and limp, having been shot by my grandad. My grandmother would hang them up in the dairy and then after a week or two they would be plucked in the barn and make an appearance for Sunday dinner. Now I am out of touch with this country lifestyle and have to be satisfied with observing the behaviour of the everyday birds that surround me in the city. There is always a pigeon cooing somewhere on a rooftop nearby, a seagull squawking above and, on my allotment, the sweeter sounds of the robin, wren and blackbird. I am drawn to these common birds, which can be encountered every day, and other artists have been too as they have been celebrated and depicted in art for hundreds of years or more.
